ELEVEN

To: Roxy, Ellis

Guys! We’re still in Nevada and the Thrall has been spotted! Or at least that’s what Merrick thinks, and I don’t see any reason to doubt him.

To: Tempest, Ellis

Oooh! Spill all. But be literary about it, because I’ve been reading these to Richard, and he’s dying to hear the latest installment of As the Tempest Turns.

To: Roxy, Ellis

Love to Uncle Richard. And of course, I’ll do this properly.

Hey.

Hmm?

You’ve been radio silent. What’s going on?

We’re at the Revelation facility. Han has just smashed one of the guards against the wall. Ouch.

Ouch? Are you hurt?

No, but the guard who jumped Andreas is. I’m willing to bet his collarbone is broken. He’s whimpering.

Awww. Maybe you should call a doctor after you guys are through there?

Tempest, these men are trying to kill us. I appreciate the fact that you dislike us harming anyone, but I draw the line at being decapitated just because breaking someone’s collarbone would upset you.

Good point. Still, let me know when you’re done, and I’ll make an anonymous call to the emergency services to go check up on them.

He sighed in my head. I may have giggled.

So far we haven’t—

You haven’t what?

Merrick?

Someone just blew up the building.

WHAT? Are you OK?

Of course. We’re several floors below the surface, but it was definitely an explosion. We’re going to check it out.

Cheese on rye, man! If the Revelation people are trying to blow you up, get out of there!

Merrick?

Merrick! Don’t you no-contact me now! You know full well I’ll stop looking up helots and go find you!

I know this, yes. It pains me greatly, but I’m aware of the fact that you’d put yourself at risk because you believe you are impervious to harm. No, do not lambaste me with all those thoughts I can feel you thinking. We haven’t been blown up. We saw ... I don’t know who he was. I thought at first he was a Dark One, but he wasn’t. I think it was the Thrall. Hold on. We’re going after him.

Don’t get too close! He might be contagious or something!

You are beyond silly, woman.

But you love that about me. Well? Did you find him?

Merrick?

Don’t make me cheese-on-rye you again!

Sorry, we were chasing a woman, two Revelation men, and a gaggle of women who were with the suspected Thrall.

Wow. Sounds like an action movie. Did you catch him?

No. He escaped with the women and two Revelation people. Clearly, he has a group helping him. But we’ll find him. We’ll find them all.

To: Tempest, Roxy

If your life isn’t made into a Netflix special, Tempest, I am going to want to know why.

Lemmas:

I’m doing a pro bono project to help a Dark One. Yes, the one who is delicious and sexy and gloriously handsome, and just so happens to live in 1889. OK, it didn’t start that way—if you will notice from the records, I had a job to take one of the Otherworld Committee back to 1889. I popped open a portal for her, but she was a bit hesitant, never having traveled in time before.
